Within a Grain of Sand

“If you held a grain of sand to the sky at arm’s length, that speck is the size of Webb’s view here.” (NASA, regarding photos from the James Webb Space Telescope, July 11, 2022)

Space has fascinated me since I was a small child. I remember lying in bed, trying to conceptualize what it meant for the universe to be infinite. I understood there were nine planets (and like others my age, I mourned Pluto’s relegation to dwarf planet status) and the sun in our solar system, and that was part of a galaxy. I learned it was growing, expanding. What space is it expanding into? But what exists beyond? The possibilities are literally endless.

This collection imagines what might exist within any single grain of sand held to the sky and hopes to share the joy—and perhaps also the existential discomfort—of knowing it could be anything.
